There are 67 state senate districts in the state of Minnesota, and we are number 37. Each district provides one Senator and two Representatives to the Minnesota State Legislature. While the districts are equal in population, approximately 75,750 people or 1.4% off the total state population, they vary greatly in their demographics: physical size, ratio of urban to suburban to agricultural populations, average levels of education and income. Minnesota’s senate districts represent the diversity of our great state. Periodically, the state legislature redraws senate district borders to adjust for the growth and movement of population within a region and thus, district outlines can be complex, particularly in an urban area like the Twin Cities. How are we organized? We are a volunteer DFL organization composed of officers, directors, and precinct chairs and co-chairs elected by their peers bi-annually at caucuses or the senate district convention. The district Executive Committee, made up of the district officers and directors, manages daily business year round. Organizing and political activity is the business of the larger Central Committee, comprised of both the district officers, directors, and the precinct chairs and co-chairs. We firmly believe that all constituencies within SD37 have a right to representation and actively seek out members from all communities to join us.
